music of John Dowland
John Dowland, “…whose heavenly touch upon the lute doth ravish human sense” was a superb Elizabethan lutenist, singer and composer. His recognition and popularity throughout Europe was enormous.
Dowland’s First Booke of Songs, published in 1597, was an instant success and was reprinted at least four times. His beautiful love songs were the “hit” tunes of his day. Dowland’s ability to take sensitive poetry and weave it together with elegant melodies and refined counterpoint leaves today’s audiences completely mesmerized. Hear why even the modern rock star Sting is such a fan of his music!
