Peninsula Pulse – 1/8/08, by Erik Eriksson

“…As the season calls as much for reflection as for proclamation, the quiet intimacy (punctuated by interjections of unbuttoned celebration) could be welcomed gratefully. The two earliest pieces were from the thirteenth century while the most recent carols tapped lightly at the door of the Baroque Age. In between was a treasury of tunes, some of which have migrated in slightly altered form into the present day. Soprano Sheffield deftly negotiated both text and line, enunciating in a fashion that paid heed to sound one would have heard at the time of origin and trimming her vibrato to a pure, restrained timbre. …The other three shone with equal lustre as they took up their varied instruments to bring vigor and piquancy to the evening’s fare.”

Door County Advocate – 12/15/07, by Marty Lash

“…Returning with the group is soprano Stephanie Sheffield. Accomplished in vocal recital and opera, Sheffield’s voice is delicate, immaculate and blends in beautifully with the ensemble. The instrumental players in the group consist of dedicated and highly skilled early music players. It is obvious they know their instruments inside out. Gary Berkenstock is the group’s founder and is accomplished in many of the instruments. He also provides commentaries that help the audience understand what they are hearing. Group members Joel Spears and Phillip Serna are remarkably adept when playing their various string instruments. If you are not yet in the holiday mood, this concert is the right cure. It will also remind you what the season is about.”
